Tag! A “First Look Meme” With Apprentice Cat

August 20th, 2012

I was in the midst of basking in beta reader praise when, Tameri Etherton tagged me in a new meme that’s making its way around the blogosphere. It’s called the Look game.

I suppose that’s because the rules say something like, you’re supposed to run a search in your work in progress for the word “look” and then paste the surrounding paragraph(s), followed by tagging as many people as possible.

Simple enough. I decided to share a bit from Apprentice Cat, since it’s coming out later this year. So here goes:

“What of his companion? Do we know where he is?”

“As a matter of fact, I do.” He heard the soft sound of paws pacing toward the door. The mage sucked in a breath, his heart beat loudly in his ears.

“Right here.”

The door scraped loudly as it opened, spilling the old mage onto the floor. He looked into the yellow eyes of a large gray tom. Turning his head he saw the misshapen lump of fur the two had been discussing. He crawled to his old friend’s side, the mottled black and brown fur unmistakable. He reached to touch the once silken body.

“I wouldn’t if I were you.”

The old mage stared hard at the gray tom whose whiskers were splayed wide. He could feel the strain of the muscles in his jaw as he clenched his teeth. His vision dimmed to pinpoints, centering on the yellow-eyed cat.

“A single feather touch can rupture the victim’s skin and cause it to expel an acidic fluid.”

Ooo ~ ~ ~ ooO

Now it’s my turn. I get to tag some of you in this meme to share a bit of your work in progress. If I tag you and you aren’t up for it, no worries. If I didn’t tag you, but you’d like to participate, that’s awesome. Just let us know in the comments so we can pop over to your blog and check you out.

If Cats Could Talk…

February 27th, 2012

I’m so excited this week because Natalie Hartford of Life Out Loud is spotlighting me on her blog. Natalie calls herself an urban redneck who loves all things pink and she’s a real firecracker. Take a moment to hop on over to her blog and enter her contest for a special edition signed Simply Prayer ebook (open internationally) or a signed copy of the paperback version (open to US/Canada).

In the meantime, I’m getting ready to re-vision my blog. By that I mean I’m going to take a short break to brainstorm some great ideas for future posts. I want to make this a place you can stop by to pick up handy tips and inspirational messages to help you in your day-to-day life, as well as catch a weekly laugh.

That being said, I don’t want to just leave you high and dry while I work up a new plan, so I’ll be re-posting some of the best from the last year. Enjoy!

If Cats Could Talk…

I’ve started editing and revising my work in progress, Apprentice Cat. It’s been tough, but rewarding. In the spirit of my main character’s nemesis, I’ve chosen a video about what cats really talk about.

What do you think your pets are really saying?

Dancing Cats, Talking Dogs and Laughing Babies… Oh My!

January 9th, 2012

I just realized I didn’t post a funny video last Monday, so today’s a two-fer.

In honor of finishing my first draft of Apprentice Cat, here’s a cat that thinks he’s in a Michael Jackson video:

And just because I love to hear babies (and little kids) laugh…

Where The Fibonacci Sequence Leads

October 26th, 2011

Welcome to Spirit Wednesday where we take a look at all things spiritual from meditation to prayer to cleaning the house. Yes, even house work can be a spiritual experience… if you choose to see it that way.

Maybe it’s just because I’m a writer (or maybe I was a cat in a former life :D), but I have an insatiable curiosity.

After reading The Da Vinci Code by Dan Brown I had to know more about the Fibonacci Sequence. What I found surprised me. Not only was it a real thing, but apparently many people call it “the fingerprint of God.” After watching the video below, I believe those people may be onto something.

Later my husband mentioned a young man who had studied the Fibonacci Sequence in relation to trees and built a solar power collector based on his findings. It wasn’t until later that I read Aidan Dwyer’s own account of his experiment.

All I can say is, “Amazing!”

Apparently solar panels placed on a “tree” using the Fibonacci Sequence will collect more energy than those placed on a traditional flat panel at a 45 degree angle. Once again God teaches us how to effectively use what we’ve been given without damaging creation.

Since then I’ve decided to use the Fibonacci Sequence in my WIP, Apprentice Cat, as part of it’s mystery. Who knows? Maybe putting the “the fingerprint of God” into the words of my own work will be a blessing. Even if it isn’t a direct blessing by the Almighty, at least it’s a neat addition to the story. 🙂

Have you ever heard/read/seen something that piqued your curiosity? What did you do with the information you gained?

The Guardian by Angela Wallace

September 28th, 2011

Welcome to Spirit Wednesday where we take a look at all things spiritual from meditation to prayer to cleaning the house. Yes, even house work can be a spiritual experience… if you choose to see it that way.

Animals can be amazing. Just when we think we understand our beloved pet, it does something unexpected — sometimes even miraculous — that makes us reevaluate the animal world altogether.

Today I’m “reprinting” with permission a story by Angela Wallace about her guardian cat Ashley, which appeared in I Love Cats magazine in 2006.

The Guardian
by Angela Wallace

The Guardian by Angela WallaceMom awoke in the middle of the night to an unfamiliar noise: a loud meowing.  Until that moment, my longhaired cat, Ashley, had never made a sound—not a howl, not a hiss, not a mewl. We had assumed she was mute.

That night, however, my mother found Ashley pacing and yowling in the hallway.  My mom knew cats were smart–there had to be some reason silent Ashley was suddenly crying.  Worried, Mom came into my room where the cat usually slept.   She found me, her diabetic daughter, suffering from a severe drop in blood sugar, too weak to call for help.  Had Mom not checked on me, I might have had a seizure, slipped into a coma, or died.

I found Ashley through an ad in the Mercury News; a family had taken in a cat, not knowing it was pregnant.  Ashley was the shyest of the three kittens needing a home. I felt drawn to her, being shy myself.  Her fur was beautifully brindled: ash gray, wood tan, and cloud white.

Ashley loved freshly baked bread.  The sound of the can-opener didn’t do a thing for her, but the sweet aroma of bread in the bread machine did. Ashley was also the only cat I’ve ever seen who liked to play with water.  We couldn’t convince her that her water dish was strictly for drinking.  Spritzing her only encouraged these shenanigans. The Guardian by Angela Wallace

Ashley never used her voice for herself—even when she was stepped on or accidentally locked in a closet—but she was my voice on multiple nights when my blood sugar dropped to dangerous levels, and I was either too weak to call out or too deep in sleep to wake.  She was an ordinary house cat, napping on pillows, lounging on the windowsill, and chasing flies through the house.  Nobody knew about her nighttime heroics unless I told them, and nobody will ever convince me that cats are useless, lazy pets.

In 2004, Ashley took her turn to fall asleep and didn’t wake up.  I still miss her, but my family will always remember her as the heroine who saved my life several times.  She was more than just a house pet, more than a child’s best friend.  Ashley was my guardian angel.

When have you experienced ordinary animals doing something extraordinary?
